Lifelong Education Student
Guidelines to Govern Admission and Enrollment
Lifelong Education status is to permit and facilitate access to
Michigan State University courses (on-campus, off-campus, or
workshops) for persons not wishing to pursue an MSU degree. With the
exception of high achieving high school students, this status is
limited to persons having attained a high school diploma or its
equivalent. Students having attained a baccalaureate degree will be
considered Graduate Lifelong Education students. All others will be
considered Undergraduate Lifelong Education students.
Lifelong Education students do not have to re-apply each
semester. Lifelong students missing any semester other than Summer,
must contact Readmissions, 150 Administration Building, Michigan State
University, East Lansing, MI 48824, (517) 355-3300.
Students pursuing MSU degree programs, programs in the Institute of
Agricultural Technology or English Language Center, and previously
enrolled MSU students who did not leave MSU in good standing are not
eligible for enrollment as Lifelong Education students.
The following rules apply to Lifelong Education students:
- Grading standards, class assignments, and attendance requirements
of the course will apply to all students in that course.
- Students must meet the stated prerequisites for the courses in
which they enroll, or, receive permission to enroll from the
department offering the course.
- Lifelong Education students may participate in an unlimited
number of courses, with the understanding that their academic
performance will be monitored on a semester by semester basis to
ensure that once nine or more credits have been attempted, a
cumulative GPA of 2.0 for undergraduates, 3.0 for graduates has
been achieved.
- All Lifelong Education students will be assessed at the Lifelong
Education rate. These rates will be set at a per credit amount.
There will be no additional fees associated with this status (i.e., no
registration, or late fees, etc.).
- Because students admitted to the Lifelong Education program are not
considered degree candidates (with the exception of students in the
Teacher Certification program), they are not eligible for any type of
financial aid, including student loans.
Enrollment through Lifelong Education does not assure admission to the
University as a degree candidate. If admission to a degree program is
granted at a later date, and if the admitting department or school and
college approve the credits as appropriate to the degree program, an
Undergraduate Lifelong Education student may apply NO MORE THAN 24
quarter credits/16 semester credits earned while under the Lifelong
Education status to the degree program. If these conditions are met
for a Graduate Lifelong Education student, NO MORE THAN 15 quarter
credits/10 semester credits earned while under the Lifelong Education
status may apply to the degree program. Courses earned under the
Undergraduate Lifelong Education status may not be applied to a
graduate degree program.
